Origin story
who doesn’t love a great origin story?
Growing up in apartheid South Africa there was always this sense of missing out, like there was a big wide and much cooler world out there and we had limited access to it. Much of the mainstream culture that we wanted to experience had limited desire to come on over to South Africa so we had to find ways of accessing it. We found inspiration in TV (when it was on), skate mags, cartoons, music and art. The work we create at Aitai Crew is a manifestation of all that inspiration. A moment to throw it all together and create something new.
Aitai [/eye_ty/] is the Japanese word for ‘missing you’. Missing someone is such a powerful and pure emotion and there’s something beautiful about creating work under that banner, that’s why Aitai.
